Lenine
Setembro 2006
Lenine MTV Unplugged As soon as he turned 8 years old, Lenine exchanged Sunday school for musical exploration. His father, a socialist, gave his children a choice in a fundamental matter: How to connect with the divine. It was in this way that this native of Pernambuco, in Northern Brazil, came in contact with such musical classics as: Jackson do Pandeiro, Luiz Gonzaga, Glen Miller, Orlando Silva, Mario Lanza, Portuguese “modinhas”, and many others. All of these influences became a hidden archive that opened up in his teenage years when Rock’n’Roll claimed his heart. This universe of influences is what Lenine has been transmitting to his audiences since his first album. Rock’n’Roll with a Maracatu beat mixed in with the Cole Porter songbook. All of this, with his own original sound that comes from the unique way that he plays the guitar that has become a stunning trademark. At his fingertips, on his guitar, Lenine can summon up a bass, harmony, rhythm, drums, in short, a universe all of its own. Lenine now releases an MTV Unplugged CD and DVD. Great for those who don’t know him yet, and even better for those who are already fans. Lenine is able to show his essence in the choice of songs and special guests he invites to perform with him. He is a songwriter for whom art is the search for something truly beautiful. A singer/songwriter, who on stage thrills the audience with his singing, accompanied on the piano by Ruriá Duprat – who is also the conductor and arranger of the string and horn section. With his natural elegance, Lenine dances, cradles his guitar during musical duels with his outstanding band, introduces his guests and wins over the friendship and love of the audience. These guest performers come from various parts of the world and are “musical discoveries” that Lenine eagerly wants to share with others. To him, they were natural choices, to the audience, a surprise. In the beautiful stage set of the Ibirapuera Theater he welcomes: Richard Bona (bass player from Cameroon on “A Medida da Paixão”), Julieta Venegas (Mexican singer, on “Miedo”, who graciously takes the stage and awes the audience with her accordion), GOG (rapper, from Brasilia joins him on “A Ponte”, a poignant moment of social criticism during the show) Christina Braga (Brazilian harpist, who delivers a lovely lyrical performance), Victor Astorga (Chilean woodwind instrumentalist who performs on “O Ùltimo Por Do Sol”), and finally Iggor Cavalera (ex-Sepultura who plays drums on the track “Dois Olhos Negros”). On this last track Iggor is also accompanied by long time Lenine drummer Pantico Rocha. Jr, Tolstoi, on acoustic 6 and 12 string guitars as well as classical guitar, and Guila, a young and talented bass player complete Lenine’s band. This release is in fact an opportunity through sound and image to understand the statement that is Lenine’s work, a chance to see the diversity and personalities of this unique group of performers on stage. On stage, Lenine is in fact an inventor. His music makes a diference. So here is my suggestion: watch and hear this performance on one of those Sunday mornings. Make yourself comfortable, turn up the volume and discover for yourself your own connection with the divine.
